Passenger died 24 hours after medevac
**Title: Urgent Medevac of American Passenger from 'World Voyager' Ends in Tragedy** In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 74-year-old American passenger aboard the *World Voyager* has passed away just 24 hours after a dramatic medical evacuation due to a severe cardiac incident. The medical emergency unfolded on March 20, 2026, while the cruise ship was navigating the northern section of the Drake Passage, making its way towards Ushuaia. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Argentine Navy initiated a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation. The ARA *Storni*, commanded by Commander GastΓ³n Fraire and stationed in Ushuaia for SAR duties, was ordered to depart at maximum speed, equipped with specialized medical personnel and essential equipment from the Ushuaia Naval Hospital. By the afternoon, as the *Storni* approached the passenger vessel β positioned approximately 20 nautical miles away in the Drake Passage β its two rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) were dispatched carrying the medical team. An on-site assessment deemed it critical for the patient to be transferred immediately to the Navy ship for swift transport to Ushuaia. Concurrently, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Ushuaia worked closely with authorities from the Government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego to prepare a Bell 427 helicopter at Harberton Ranch, situated along the Beagle Channel. However, due to nighttime operational constraints and the evolving medical condition of the patient, the decision was made to continue the evacuation aboard the naval vessel. Without altering its trajectory, the *Storni* dispatched RHIBs to Harberton to rendezvous with medical personnel and equipment from the Provincial Emergency Response Directorate, who had been airlifted to the site. These teams collaborated on board to stabilize the passenger's condition. After tirelessly working throughout the night, the Navy vessel finally reached Ushuaia around 10:00 p.m., where the patient was promptly transferred via ambulance to the San Jorge Clinic for urgent medical treatment. Tragically, despite these efforts, the man succumbed to his condition just a day post-evacuation. This unfortunate incident underscores the risks associated with maritime travel in remote regions and highlights the critical role of rapid response medical teams in emergencies at sea. Allision in Ushuiaia
On Jan 5, 2026, the 'World Voyager' broke lose from its berth in the port of Ushuaia amid winds of about 30 knots and gusting to 40 knots, and went adrift along with the gangway still hanging from its starboard side. The ship first struck the port structure and then was pushed with its starboard side bow against the port side stern of the cruise ship 'Viking Octantis' (IMO: 9863194), which was moored nearby. The impact was well above the waterline, so no water ingress occurred. The 'Viking Octantis' suffered only minor damage to one of its rear railings, while the bow of the 'World Voyager' suffered a crack, with no structural damage reported. There were no injuries either. The 'World Voyager' dropped anchor in pos. 54Β° 48' S 068Β° 16 W after the allision, before heading to Yankee HRB with an ETA as of Jan 8. The 'Viking Octantis' left the port on Jan 6 en route to Fournier Bay with an ETA as of Jan 8. The Argentine Naval Prefecture indicated that an official report was expected to determine precisely how the incident occurred. The incident was caused by a rope breaking at the stern of the 'World Voyager', which was not a port mooring line, but a line belonging to the vessel. The accident happened while the province was being inspected by the National Ports and Navigation Agency (ANPYN) following a complaint about the poor condition of the Ushuaia port infrastructure. The national port authority conducted an on-site inspection that revealed a series of structural flaws, including in the port fenders.
