Ferry started service on route Rødby-Puttgarden more than one year behind schedule

Mar 10, 2026 10:59

**Title: The 'Baltic Whale' Sets Sail on Rødby-Puttgarden Route, Over a Year Late** On March 10, 2026, the 'Baltic Whale' officially commenced operations on the Rødby-Puttgarden route, marking its arrival more than a year later than initially planned. Originally slated for delivery in late 2024 or early 2025, the ferry faced significant construction delays at Cemre Shipyard. The inaugural voyage departed from Rødby at 8:05 a.m., carrying a mix of crew, representatives from Scandlines, and freight customers eager to experience this historic crossing. Notably, the 'Baltic Whale' is equipped with one of the largest battery systems aboard any ferry globally, allowing it to complete its journeys while emitting zero direct emissions during standard operation. The vessel also prioritizes environmental protection by reducing noise pollution above and below the waterline. Michael Guldmann Petersen, Chief Operating Officer of Scandlines, expressed the company's enthusiasm about the commissioning of the 'Baltic Whale,' stating, "Today's launch is a significant milestone for Scandlines, a day we've eagerly anticipated. The conception of a battery-powered ferry first emerged in 2018, and seeing it come to fruition is a substantial achievement for us. The 'Baltic Whale' embodies our commitment to achieving zero-emission ferry operations by 2040 and promises the reliability and stability our customers expect.” Designed primarily as a freight ferry, the 'Baltic Whale' can transport up to 66 trucks across two decks, along with hazardous goods such as industrial products, batteries, cosmetics, and auto parts. This capability will allow Scandlines to increase freight transport efficiency while freeing up additional space for passengers and vehicles on their other ferries. With the addition of the 'Baltic Whale,' Scandlines is enhancing its freight capacity on the Rødby-Puttgarden route by an impressive 27%. The ferry rounds the 18.5-kilometer crossing in approximately 45 minutes, benefiting from advanced loading infrastructure that reduces boarding time to just 12 minutes. An intelligent charging system ensures that the ferry powers on automatically in under 15 seconds, regardless of water conditions. Furthermore, the vessel features hybrid operation capabilities, equipped with diesel generators to be utilized as needed.
