Apr 20, 2026 09:34

**Title: 'Ridens' Conducts Dramatic Rescue of 16 Migrants off Dunkirk** On April 17, 2026, the CROSS Gris-Nez received alarming reports regarding a surge of migrant boats departing from the coast of Dunkirk. In response, a coordinated rescue operation was immediately initiated, deploying multiple resources to ensure the safety of those at sea. The assets involved in the operation included the rescue vessel 'Ridens', the BSAM 'Garonne', and two emergency response vessels, 'ESMP 03' and 'ESMP 04', originating from Calais and Dunkirk respectively. Earlier during the night of April 16, a makeshift boat carrying migrants was sighted near the Gravelines area, prompting CROSS to act swiftly. The 'Ridens', along with 'ESMP 03' and 'ESMP 04', was dispatched to monitor the situation and offer assistance. Despite the efforts of the rescue team, the occupants of the boat declined the help and pressed onward toward England. As the migrant vessel continued its arduous journey, the 'Ridens' was quick to respond to unfolding circumstances. Deploying its rescue boat, known as EDO, the crew was able to successfully rescue 16 individuals who were in urgent need of assistance. Meanwhile, the rest of the group aboard the makeshift vessel proceeded toward British waters, under vigilant observation by the BSAM 'Garonne'. The rescued migrants were promptly brought aboard the 'Ridens' and later disembarked at the port of Dunkirk. Once ashore, they received vital care from land-based rescue services, ensuring their urgent needs were addressed in a critical moment of distress. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced in maritime migration and the commitment of rescue operations in responding to emergencies at sea.

72 migrants rescued in five operations

Apr 15, 2026 10:06

**Title: 72 Migrants Rescued in Coordinated Operations Across the English Channel** In an intensive series of rescue missions spanning the night of April 12 to 13, 2026, a total of 72 migrants were saved from perilous conditions in the Strait of Dover. The CROSS Gris-Nez, the operational arm coordinating maritime safety, received multiple alerts regarding migrant vessels departing from various points, leading to a rapid response involving an extensive array of resources. To ensure the safety of those attempting the crossing, the CROSS Gris-Nez deployed several key assets, including the patrol vessel 'Thémis', the Action Air Environnement aircraft, and the maritime security vessel ESMP 03, alongside the surveillance craft 'Maroni' of the maritime gendarmerie. Additionally, two rescue vessels, 'Ridens' and 'Minck', were called into action. Late on April 12, the Ostend Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) notified CROSS Gris-Nez about a Belgian migrant vessel in distress. In response, the Belgian patrol boats 'SPN-01' and 'Orka' were dispatched to oversee the situation. To assist, the 'Ridens' was sent to relieve them and promptly deployed its rescue craft (EDO) after five individuals signaled for help. Following this, the 'ESMP 03' from Dunkirk joined the mission, eventually followed by the 'Thémis', which executed a successful rescue of 21 additional migrants who had suffered a breakdown. These individuals were transported safely to Calais, where local rescue services awaited. Continuing their vigilance, the 'Ridens' maintained observation over the distressed vessel and ultimately rescued 47 more migrants still aboard, ensuring they too were brought ashore at Calais. In a related incident during the same night, the Dunkirk lighthouse detected another migrant boat navigating towards the shore to collect additional individuals. The CROSS Gris-Nez swiftly responded by deploying the 'Pluvier' and the 'Ridens', which launched its rigid inflatable boat to provide immediate assistance. An aerial search was also conducted by the Action Air Environnement aircraft, which played a critical role in locating individuals in need of help. Four migrants then requested aid, and the 'Ridens' safely boarded them and transferred them to the 'Maroni', which transported them to Dunkirk. Overall, the CROSS Gris-Nez coordinated five distinct operations that resulted in the successful rescue of 72 migrants attempting the treacherous journey across the English Channel from France to the UK. All individuals rescued were subsequently handed over to shore-based emergency services for further support.

102 migrants rescued during four operations - four more died

**Title: Dramatic Migrant Rescues in Dunkirk: 102 Lives Saved Amid Tragedy** **Content:** In a flurry of life-saving operations on the night of April 7, 2023, the Dunkirk lighthouse alerted the CROSS Gris-Nez about a migrant vessel departing from Dunkirk-East. The CROSS promptly dispatched the rescue vessel 'Ridens' to surveil the situation, as the boat navigated towards Malo-les-Bains beach to gather additional migrants. Compounding the efforts, the rigid inflatable boat of the 'Oyapock' was deployed to enhance the rescue operations amid the tumultuous embarkation phase. By late night, both the 'Ridens' and the 'Oyapock' successfully rescued a total of 12 individuals. However, chaos ensued when the migrant boat experienced mechanical failure, leaving 67 people stranded on board. The dedicated teams swiftly moved in, with the rigid inflatable boats from both 'Ridens' and 'Oyapock' executing a rescue for the remaining passengers. The 'Ridens' returned to Dunkirk in the early morning hours of April 8, where the 79 rescued individuals were disembarked and subsequently transferred to shore-based emergency services for aid. Shortly thereafter, the National Gendarmerie alerted CROSS Gris-Nez about another migrant boat in distress in the Bay of Somme region. The CROSS swiftly responded by deploying an Action Air Environnement aircraft, alongside the 'Armoise', to monitor the continuously evolving situation. The 'Armoise' went on to rescue 23 migrants who had requested assistance, safely landing them at the port of Boulogne for handover to land-based rescue teams. In total, the CROSS conducted a series of four rescues on April 7, successfully bringing 102 people to safety and into the custody of local emergency services. Tragically, the situation took a grim turn on the morning of April 9 when four migrants - two men and two women - lost their lives while attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat. The prefect of Pas-de-Calais confirmed that the victims succumbed to strong currents while trying to board a taxi boat, a tactic often employed by smugglers to evade authorities by picking up migrants in coastal waters. In a related incident off the coast of Boulogne, between Équihen-Plage and Hardelot-Plage, rescue services managed to save at least 42 individuals. The series of events highlights the ongoing crisis of migration across the English Channel, emphasizing both the heroic efforts of rescuers and the dangers faced by those attempting the perilous journey.

**Title: Tragic Night at Sea: 111 Migrants Rescued from Dangers of the Dover Strait, Two Lives Lost** **Content:** On the night of March 31, a series of distressing migrant boat departures were reported to the CROSS Gris-Nez in the busy Strait of Dover. As dawn broke at approximately 7:30 a.m., a vessel off the coast of Zuydcoote triggered a notification from the gendarmerie to the CROSS. In swift response, the rescue vessel 'Ridens' was dispatched to provide essential monitoring and support for the boat’s occupants. By around 9:30 a.m., the boat made its way towards Gravelines, where around 30 migrants eagerly awaited on Petit Fort Philippe beach for their boarding opportunity. The CROSS quickly augmented its efforts with additional assistance from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service, deploying the safety vessels 'ESMP 03' and 'ESMP 04' to support the 'Ridens' as the boarding process commenced around 10:00 a.m. Launching its operational rescue boat (EDO), the 'Ridens' successfully rescued eight individuals in distress, three of whom required urgent medical care. Following their retrieval, all eight migrants were brought aboard the 'Ridens', and a conference call was established with the Maritime Medical Coordination Center in Le Havre. This coordination led to the deployment of a Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service (SMUR) team to provide immediate assistance. Despite prompt medical interventions, two of the rescued individuals were tragically pronounced dead. The third person, in dire need of urgent care, was taken ashore at Gravelines beach and transferred to local emergency services. In a proactive measure, the CROSS deployed a Dauphin helicopter from the French Navy to conduct an aerial reconnaissance of the area to ensure no further individuals were in jeopardy. The 'Ridens' then navigated towards Dunkirk, where the remaining migrants, along with the two deceased, were disembarked at the port. Under the oversight of the Maritime Prefect, CROSS Gris-Nez continued its search and rescue operations, employing multiple vessels, including the Seaowl company's 'Minck' and 'Ridens', along with maritime gendarmerie RIBs 'ESMP 03', 'ESMP 04', and 'ESMP 11'. Additionally, assets like the emergency tug 'Abeille Normandie', the customs patrol boat 'Jacques Oudart Fourmentin', and the surveillance vessel 'Oyapock' assisted in the operations. The Dauphin helicopter based in Le Touquet, alongside both nautical and land resources from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service, complemented the multi-faceted rescue efforts. During the ongoing night operations, the CROSS intercepted another vessel reportedly rescuing migrants off the beach of Sainte-Cécile, successfully aiding all 77 individuals on board and subsequently transferring them to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. Simultaneously, another report concerning a migrant boat near Sangatte with 12 occupants led to the immediate dispatch of the 'Minck', which effectively rescued all individuals and brought them safely to the port of Calais. The 'Ridens', further supported by the JOF (Journée d'Opérations Maritimes - Maritime Operations Support Unit), also assisted a migrant vessel originating from Dunkirk, aiding 15 individuals who were then disembarked at Calais. In summary, the CROSS orchestrated a total of eight operations to tackle the perilous migrant crossings from France to the United Kingdom, culminating in the rescue of 111 individuals, while heartbreakingly confirming the loss of two lives.

103 migrants rescued from three boats

Mar 23, 2026 09:38

**Title: 103 Migrants Rescued from Multiple Boats in the Strait of Dover** In a series of dramatic maritime rescue operations on March 19 and 20, 2026, authorities in the Strait of Dover successfully saved 103 migrants attempting to cross the treacherous waters. The CROSS Gris-Nez reported multiple departures of migrant boats, prompting the deployment of specialized rescue resources to address the urgent situations. Among the vessels assigned to the operation were the rescue ship **Ridens**, the patrol boat **Cormoran**, and the surveillance vessel **Oyapock**. During the night hours, the Dunkirk signal station spotted a migrant boat in the Dunkirk-East sector and relayed the information to the CROSS. In response, the **Ridens** was dispatched along with the Action Air Environnement aircraft to maintain aerial surveillance while awaiting the vessel's arrival. Upon reaching the scene, the **Ridens** successfully rescued 21 individuals, who were then transported to the Calais dock, where they received care from local shore-based rescue services. Shortly after, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Ostend informed CROSS Gris-Nez of their deployment of the patrol boat **Castor** to monitor another migrant vessel that had departed from Belgium. To support the **Castor**, the **Oyapock** was sent out. The **Cormoran** later took over the mission, successfully rescuing four additional migrants, who were also disembarked in Calais. On March 20, an increased response was evident as both the **Minck** and **Ridens** were called back into action, joined by the **Oyapock**, **Cormoran**, and the patrol boat **Jeanne Barret**. That night, the MRCC in Ostend reported that it had sent the **Orka** to keep an eye on yet another migrant boat leaving Belgium. To relieve the **Orka**, the **Oyapock** was deployed before being followed by another shift change to the **Cormoran**. Tragically, the migrant vessel faced engine failure, prompting the activation of the Emergency Distress Organization (EDO). A total of 78 migrants were rescued and later transported to the Calais dock, where they too received assistance from onshore rescue services. These rescue operations underscore the persistent challenges faced in the region and the dedication of maritime authorities to ensuring the safety of those risking their lives at sea.

The 'Jeanne Barret' was initially dispatched to monitor the situation and prepare for potential assistance. By 9:30 a.m., the 'Rondache' and 'ESMP 03' took over monitoring duties. Come 10:00 a.m., the 'Ridens' was sent to further support the mission. As the day progressed, the migrant boat attempted to head toward Gravelines beach to collect additional passengers but unfortunately suffered an engine malfunction, preventing it from proceeding across the Channel. Despite offers of help from the 'Ridens,' the migrants on board declined any assistance, maintaining this stance until around 4:50 p.m. It was then that some migrants finally requested help, leading to the 'Ridens' rescuing 13 individuals. Subsequently, the vessel made its way to Calais for debarkation, where the rescued migrants were handed over to the state land services at 8:45 p.m. Simultaneously, the CROSS had dispatched the 'Minck' to replace the 'Ridens.' By 7:30 p.m., the 'Minck' successfully rescued five more migrants, although 14 others on the vessel continued to resist assistance. The precarious boat ultimately ran aground on the beach, prompting CROSS to instruct the 'Minck' and local security forces to survey the coastline to ensure all migrants safely reached shore. At around 12:20 a.m., the 'Minck' brought the five rescued migrants to Dunkirk, where they also were taken in by land-based rescue services. In total, CROSS executed four operations leading to the successful rescue of 18 migrants who received care from rescue teams. The night of March 9 saw yet another migrant boat sighted in the Dunkirk vicinity, prompting a further response from CROSS Gris-Nez. The 'Minck' monitored this new boat, which experienced an engine failure around 4:00 a.m. Thanks to the timely response of the crew already in communication with the boat, all 28 occupants were safely rescued. The 'Minck' towed the abandoned boat and returned to Dunkirk harbor, ensuring that all migrants were cared for upon arrival. These coordinated operations underscore the ongoing humanitarian efforts in the region as the risks associated with maritime crossings continue to challenge authorities and migrants alike.
