US Coast Guard Conducts Emergency Medevac of Crew Member from 'Natoma' off Oahu
On August 31, 2017, a 65-year-old crew member aboard the tugboat "Natoma" required urgent medical attention, prompting a medevac operation 50 miles north of Oahu. The emergency call was made at approximately 8:50 a.m. by the captain of the "Natoma," who reported that a crew member was exhibiting symptoms consistent with a stroke. At the time of the incident, the vessel was situated around 70 miles offshore. In response, watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu Command Center consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who endorsed the need for a medevac. A Hercules aircrew was redirected from a training exercise at 9:48 a.m., while a Dolphin helicopter aircrew took to the skies at 10:45 a.m. The MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point successfully hoisted the crew member and transported him in stable condition to Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, arriving at 12:18 p.m. An HC-130 Hercules aircrew provided aerial support and facilitated communications during the operation.
