Tragic Incident: Crane Collapse at ENI's Oil Platform Claims Life of Operator

Mar 05, 2019 19:23

On March 5, 2019, a catastrophic structural failure occurred at ENI’s 'Barbara F' oil platform, located 60 miles off the coast of Ancona, Italy, at 7:45 a.m. A lifting crane, while in the process of hoisting a nitrogen gas cylinder, broke away from the platform's infrastructure. The crane fell onto the offshore supply ship 'Aline B,' subsequently plunging into the sea with the 63-year-old operator still inside the cabin. The operator was an employee of ENI, hailing from San Salvo in Chieti. The incident resulted in serious injuries to two technicians aboard 'Aline B,' aged 48 and 53, who were swiftly transported to Torrette di Ancona hospital via helicopter provided by ENI. Emergency response efforts commenced at 9:30 a.m., involving Coast Guard patrol boats and an HH139 helicopter from the Air Force, in conjunction with a vessel from the Port Authority of Ancona. The crane and operator's cabin were found hanging from cables at a depth of 70 meters. By 3:30 p.m., a team of divers from the Ancona fire brigade successfully located both the cabin and the body of the operator inside.
