May 05, 2026 10:10

**Title: Tragic Migrant Crossing: 111 Rescued, Two Lives Lost** On May 3, 2026, a series of perilous migrant boat crossings prompted an urgent response from the CROSS Gris-Nez in France. A coordinated deployment of multiple maritime resources was initiated to ensure the safety of those attempting the dangerous journey across the sea. This operation involved the following vessels: - 'VB Abeille Normandie' (chartered by the French Navy) - 'Minck' (chartered by the French State) - 'Ridens' (also chartered by the French State) - 'Armoise' (operated by the Maritime Gendarmerie) - 'Yser' (another vessel from the Maritime Gendarmerie) - 'Arago' (from the French Navy) - 'Pluvier' (also from the French Navy) - A Dauphin helicopter from the 35th Naval Air Flotilla, based in Le Touquet - 'SNS 7-034 - Notre Dame des Sables' (from the SNSM station at Berck-sur-Mer) - 'SNS 076 - Président Jacques Huret' (from the SNSM station in Boulogne-sur-Mer) During the night, a patrol from the internal security forces spotted a floundering boat filled with migrants in the southern sector of Hardelot. Due to a technical malfunction, the vessel drifted dangerously out to sea. Under the vigilant coordination of CROSS Gris-Nez, the 'Minck' successfully rescued 17 individuals from the frail boat, bringing them safely to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer by 4:00 a.m. Meanwhile, the 'Armoise' was deployed to comb the surrounding waters for any additional victims. Despite extensive searching in the area, no further casualties were found from the initial incident. Amidst this, additional reports emerged regarding another group of migrants congregating on a nearby beach. The Pas-de-Calais Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) alerted CROSS Gris-Nez about this new attempted crossing. The 'Arago' patrol boat and the lifeboat 'SNS 076 - Président Jacques Huret' rushed to the scene to monitor the situation. Tragically, the second vessel encountered engine failure while traversing the Strait of Gibraltar, culminating in a large-scale rescue operation that involved all 94 individuals on board. Of these, 85 were successfully retrieved by the 'Arago' while nine others found safety thanks to the 'SNS 076 - Président Jacques Huret.' All survivors were transported back to Boulogne-sur-Mer; however, this operation bore a somber note as two migrants were confirmed deceased. This series of rescues underscores the ongoing maritime crisis and the harsh realities faced by those seeking refuge and safety across treacherous waters.

**Title: Multiple Migrant Rescues in the Strait of Dover Amid Coordinated Operations** **Content:** On April 25, 2026, a series of distress signals from migrant vessels in the Strait of Dover prompted immediate action from the CROSS Gris-Nez. In response, a robust fleet was mobilized, including the rescue vessel 'Minck', the tug 'VB Abeille Normandie', the patrol boat 'Cormoran', and the coastguard vessel 'Yser'. Additionally, the Dauphin helicopter, stationed in Le Touquet, and rescue boats 'SNS 080 Notre-Dame de Bonsecours' from Dieppe and 'SNS 7-034 Notre-Dame des Sables' from Berck were deployed. Early in the day, CROSS Gris-Nez reported a vessel in distress near Ault. The 'Cormoran' was dispatched to oversee the situation and provide assistance where necessary. The vessel launched its operational rescue boat (EDO), which first attended to an individual in urgent need of help. With the situation evolving, two additional people were rescued during the crossing. As the day unfolded, the three individuals initially assisted by the 'Cormoran' were later transferred to the 'Abeille Normandie', which had arrived to take over operations. This vessel also successfully assisted three other occupants from the same troubled boat. All six rescued migrants were finally brought ashore later in the evening at Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they were looked after by shore-based rescue services. Earlier in the morning, maritime authorities had noted another migrant boat leaving the Cap d’Ailly area, heading northward. In response, CROSS Gris-Nez assigned the all-weather lifeboat 'SNS 080 Notre-Dame de Bonsecours' along with VCSM 'Yser'. They were subsequently joined by 'SNS 7-034 Notre-Dame des Sables' and later by 'Minck' in the late afternoon. As operations continued, the 'Cormoran' reached the vicinity of Wimereux to assist individuals waiting at the beach. While boarding commenced, several migrants struggled, necessitating rescue efforts by both the 'Minck' and 'Cormoran'. Six of the rescued individuals were reported to be in stable condition; however, one migrant was unconscious and required immediate medical attention. CROSS Gris-Nez collaborated with the Maritime Medical Coordination Center in Le Havre, which recommended evacuation by helicopter to Boulogne-sur-Mer’s hospital. Consequently, the Dauphin helicopter was dispatched, accompanied by a medical team from SMUR-M (Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service). The medical team was winched onto the 'Cormoran' to provide care for the affected individual, who was then airlifted to the hospital shortly after midnight. Meanwhile, the migrant boat encountered mechanical issues, drawing the attention of 'Minck', which methodically rescued all 106 occupants. The operation concluded successfully, with all rescued migrants transported to the Paul Devot pontoon in the port of Calais. Around 3:00 a.m. on April 26, the 112 migrants from the 'Minck' safely disembarked and were greeted by medical personnel and support teams onshore.

72 migrants rescued in five operations

**Title: 72 Migrants Rescued in a Series of Operations in the Strait of Dover** **Content:** Over the night of April 12 to 13, 2026, multiple migrant vessels navigating through the Strait of Dover prompted urgent responses from the CROSS Gris-Nez. This critical situation led to the mobilization of a series of maritime assets to ensure the safety of those aboard. Among the resources deployed were: - The patrol vessel 'Thémis' - The Action Air Environnement aircraft - Maritime and port security unit vessel ESMP 03 - Surveillance vessel 'Maroni' from the maritime gendarmerie - Patrol vessel 'Pluvier' - Rescue vessels 'Ridens' and 'Minck' As night fell on April 12, the MRCC in Ostend notified CROSS Gris-Nez regarding the deployment of the Belgian patrol boats 'SPN-01' and 'Orka,' which were monitoring a migrant craft that had set out from Belgium. To support their efforts, CROSS Gris-Nez dispatched the 'Ridens,' which quickly deployed its rescue craft (EDO) to assist five migrants in distress. Following this, the Dunkirk-based 'ESMP 03' and subsequently the 'Thémis' were sent to take over operations. Amidst these efforts, the migrant vessel faced mechanical issues, leading to the rescue of an additional 21 individuals by the 'Thémis,' which safely transported them to the port of Calais, where they were received by ground rescue teams. The ongoing support from 'Ridens' resulted in the recovery of 47 more individuals who remained aboard the vessel. They, too, were disembarked at Calais without incident. That same night, the Dunkirk lighthouse reported another migrant vessel heading near the beach, potentially to gather more individuals. Responding promptly, CROSS Gris-Nez dispatched the 'Pluvier' for surveillance and further deployed the 'Ridens,' which utilized its rigid inflatable boat for an immediate response. Additionally, the 'Action Air Environnement' aircraft conducted aerial search operations to assist in locating the vessel. During this operation, four individuals signaled for help, and the 'Ridens' successfully brought them on board and transferred them to the 'Maroni,' which transported them to Dunkirk. In total, these five coordinated operations by CROSS Gris-Nez resulted in the successful rescue of 72 migrants attempting the perilous crossing from France to the United Kingdom, all of whom were cared for by onshore rescue services.

**Title: Tragic Night at Sea: 111 Migrants Rescued in Multiple Operations, Two Lives Lost** On the night of March 31, 2026, the CROSS Gris-Nez reported a surge in migrant boat departures in the busy Strait of Dover. Early the following morning, around 7:30 a.m., gendarmes alerted the CROSS about a vulnerable vessel off the coast near Zuydcoote. In response, the search and rescue vessel 'Ridens' was swiftly dispatched to monitor the situation and provide essential aid to those onboard if needed. By 9:30 a.m., the migrant boat veered towards Gravelines, where approximately 30 migrants were poised on the beach at Petit Fort Philippe, ready to board. To assist with the operation, additional resources were mobilized, including units from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service and port safety vessels 'ESMP 03' and 'ESMP 04'. The boarding operation commenced around 10:00 a.m. During the rescue efforts, the 'Ridens' deployed its operational rescue boat (EDO), successfully bringing eight distressed migrants aboard. Among them, three individuals urgently required medical assistance. The crew established a conference call with the Maritime Medical Coordination Center in Le Havre, which promptly dispatched a Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Service (SMUR) team. A team of firefighters from SDIS 59 utilized a rigid inflatable boat to navigate to the 'Ridens,' where they provided further medical care. Tragically, despite immediate first aid, two individuals were pronounced dead, while the third, in critical condition, was transported to Gravelines beach for urgent land-based medical support. To ensure the safety of any others in distress, a French Navy Dauphin helicopter was deployed to conduct aerial reconnaissance. The 'Ridens' then proceeded to Dunkirk, docking at the port where the five surviving migrants and the remains of the two deceased were disembarked. The search and rescue operations, carried out under the direction of the Maritime Prefect, saw the involvement of various state and emergency resources, including the Seaowl company's rescue vessels 'Minck' and 'Ridens', the Maritime Gendarmerie's rigid inflatable boats 'ESMP 03', 'ESMP 04', and 'ESMP 11', the emergency tug 'Abeille Normandie', customs patrol boat 'Jacques Oudart Fourmentin', as well as the patrol boat 'Armoise' and surveillance vessel 'Oyapock'. Additional support came from the Dauphin helicopter based in Le Touquet and medical units such as SMUR and SAMU for maritime coordination. Throughout that night, the CROSS received updates about another vessel off Sainte-Cécile, which was picking up migrants. The 'Abeille Normandie' was deployed and successfully rescued all 77 individuals onboard, transporting them to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer for transfer to shore-based rescue services. Simultaneously, the CROSS responded to a report of a migrant boat off the coast of Sangatte with 12 people onboard, dispatching the 'Minck' for interception. All 12 migrants were rescued and taken to the port of Calais. In total, the CROSS managed eight operations to aid boats attempting the perilous crossing from France to the United Kingdom, rescuing 111 individuals. Sadly, two lives were lost during these desperate attempts for safety at sea, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by migrants.

**Title: Five Rescue Missions Save 46 Migrants in the Strait of Dover** On March 9, 2026, the CROSS Gris-Nez activated multiple operations to provide aid to migrant vessels navigating the treacherous waters of the Strait of Dover. Responding to reports of migrant departures, a coordinated effort was launched, deploying an extensive array of maritime resources including: - The rescue ships 'Minck' and 'Ridens' - The patrol boats 'Jeanne Barret' and 'Géranium' - The surveillance vessel VSMP 'Rondache' - The lifeboat 'ESMP 03' from the Calais Maritime and Port Security Platoon (PSMP) The initial alert came from the Border Police (PAF) around 8:00 a.m. regarding a migrant vessel spotted in the Aa Canal near Gravelines. The 'Jeanne Barret' was dispatched first to monitor the vessel's progress and offer support if necessary. Later, around 9:30 a.m., the 'Rondache' and 'ESMP 03' took over monitoring duties. At approximately 10:00 a.m., the 'Ridens' was assigned to replace the 'Rondache' and 'ESMP 03'. As the situation unfolded, the migrant boat attempted to approach Gravelines beach for additional passengers but unfortunately experienced an engine failure, hampering any plans of crossing the Channel. Despite being offered help by the 'Ridens,' the migrants on board declined assistance until the late afternoon. It wasn’t until around 4:50 p.m. that some individuals aboard finally sought help. The 'Ridens' managed to rescue 13 migrants and safely transported them to Calais, where they arrived by 8:45 p.m. and were placed in the custody of state land services. Simultaneously, the 'Minck' was dispatched to relieve the 'Ridens' in another section of the operation. At around 7:30 p.m., the crew of the 'Minck' successfully rescued five more migrants, leaving 14 individuals still on board who continued to refuse help. Eventually, the precarious vessel ran aground along the beach. In response, the CROSS instructed the 'Minck' and security forces to conduct a thorough search of the coastline to confirm the safety of all migrants. By midnight, the 'Minck' had disembarked the previously rescued five migrants at Dunkirk, where they received care from land rescue services. Altogether, the CROSS orchestrated four operations, culminating in the successful rescue of 18 migrants who were subsequently supported by rescue teams. As nighttime fell, another distress call came in regarding a migrant boat in the Dunkirk vicinity, leading to the dispatch of the 'Minck' once again. At about 4:00 a.m., that boat also suffered an engine malfunction, prompting the 'Minck' to swiftly rescue all 28 occupants. The crew towed the stranded boat and returned to Dunkirk, where the migrants were received by onshore rescue services. This extensive effort underscores the ongoing maritime crisis and the commitment of rescue services to safeguard lives in perilous waters.
