Ferry to be sold
**Title: Greenland's 'Maliina Ittuk' Ferry on the Market for Sale** Greenland's Disko Line is parting ways with its ferry, the 'Maliina Ittuk,' now listed for sale at Atlantic Shipping for 105 million Danish crowns. This price reflects the vessel's initial cost incurred by the shipping company. The decision to sell comes as the ferry is deemed too large for the port facilities in Ilulissat, where it was intended to service the lucrative route between Ilulissat and Qeqertarsuaq. Originally commissioned from Assens Shipyard, the construction of the 'Maliina Ittuk' faced significant delays. By late 2023, Disko Line opted to transfer the project to Faaborg Værft, aiming to expedite completion. However, the ferry encountered generator issues soon after being delivered, necessitating an extended stay at Orskov Yard in Frederikshavn for repairs. Finally, on October 20, 2025, the 'Maliina Ittuk' made its delayed debut in Greenland, almost two years behind schedule. Currently, the ferry operates on the route between Qaqortoq and Narsarsuaq, but it will soon be rendered inoperable with the opening of a new airport in Qaqortoq in just 14 days. While there has been considerable interest from potential buyers, a sale has yet to be finalized. Disko Line remains hopeful that the vessel can be sold for an amount that recoups the expenses incurred throughout its challenging journey to service.
New ferry may be taken out of service
**Title: Potential Early Retirement for the 'Maliina Ittuk' Ferry Due to Port Limitations** In a surprising turn of events, the 'Maliina Ittuk' ferry, which was only delivered to Greenland less than five months ago, may face an early exit from service. This contemplation arises amid concerns raised by Michael Sloth Højgaard, the managing director of Disko Line, who criticized the insufficient development of Greenlandic ports relative to the growing number of vessels navigating its waters. According to Højgaard, the newly built passenger ship is struggling to find docking space in the designated ports, highlighting a significant gap in the maritime infrastructure that has not kept pace with the fleet expansion. He characterized the situation as a pressing issue, noting that the ports are underdeveloped and in dire need of investment. Responding to these criticisms, Aqqaluaq B. Egede, the Minister of Social Affairs, Labour, Housing, Infrastructure, and Outlying Areas for the Greenlandic Self-Government, countered that the root of the problem lies not with the port capacities but with the construction of the 'Maliina Ittuk' itself. This exchange underscores the broader challenges facing Greenland’s maritime infrastructure amid its evolving transportation needs. As discussions continue, the fate of the 'Maliina Ittuk' remains uncertain, leaving many to question the sustainability of the region’s maritime developments.
New Disko Line ship hit by engine problem
The Greenlandic hybrid ferry 'Maliina Ittuk', while sailing in Danish waters before the planned departure to Greenland, has been hit by technical problems which were observed with a generator in one of the ferry's engines.. The vessel is being repaired at the Orskov Shipyard shipyard in Frederikshaven since May 10, 2025. The Orskov Yard is currently conducting a thorough technical examination of the ferry, including repair of the affected engine and a full review of the remaining three engines. To ensure stable operations in June and July, the Disko Line has initiated a temporary reassignment of its vessels, so that the planned sailings during this period can be carried out as planned. There was no date when the 'Maliina Ittuk', which left the yard in Faaborg on March 31, will be able to set sail.
