Assistance during complicated medevac
**Title: Lifesaving Coordination in Challenging Medivac Operation** On the evening of March 9, 2026, the Borkum DGzRS lifeboat 'Hamburg' was dispatched for a critical medical evacuation involving a seriously ill crew member aboard a Norwegian offshore supply vessel. The emergency unfolded due to a 47-year-old Scottish man reporting intense abdominal pain. The captain of the wind farm installation vessel promptly notified the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Bremen, leading to urgent action. As medical attention was initially provided by the vessel’s on-board paramedic, it became clear that the patient's condition necessitated immediate transfer to a hospital for advanced treatment. However, heavy sea fog blanketing large areas of the North Sea, with visibility dropping to under 150 meters, ruled out the possibility of helicopter support. Recognizing the urgency, the MRCC dispatched the lifeboat shortly before 10 p.m. for a challenging 2.5-hour journey. The customs vessel 'Borkum', equipped with a paramedic, arrived on the scene around 11:30 p.m. to assist. Due to the structural limitations of the wind farm installation vessel, traditional boarding methods were impractical. To streamline the transfer, the customs vessel’s paramedic, an accompanying individual, and a crew member were initially moved to the 'Improver' for further transport to the 'Hamburg'. As the conditions worsened, the visibility at sea diminished further, adding to the complications. Upon reaching the rendezvous point, the 'Hamburg' swiftly boarded the four individuals from the 'Improver'. This efficient transfer was critical as time was of the essence. Approximately 2.5 hours later, the patient, along with the accompanying crew member, were successfully handed over to an ambulance in Eemshaven, ensuring the crew member received the medical attention he urgently needed.
