Cargo ship troubled off Bejaia

Apr 02, 2026 10:51

**Title: Gulf West Cargo Ship Rescued from Distress Near Bejaïa** On the evening of March 31, 2026, the cargo ship 'Gulf West' found itself in a precarious situation off the coast of Tichy, approximately 20 kilometers east of Béjaïa, Algeria. The vessel encountered significant distress conditions due to rough seas and deteriorating weather that had plagued the area for several days. Having departed from the port of Djen Djen, the Gulf West was in search of refuge in the Bay of Béjaïa. However, the sudden changes in weather led to the ship veering off course and being thrusted toward Tichy Beach, raising concerns about a possible grounding. In response to the emergency, the port authorities in Béjaïa promptly dispatched two tugboats to assist the troubled vessel. Thanks to their swift action, the Gulf West was guided away from the hazardous coastline and brought to a secure location. To ensure ongoing safety and oversight, a monitoring unit has been established to oversee potential interventions until conditions stabilize.
