On the morning of November 3, 2021, a critical medical situation unfolded aboard the bulk carrier 'Heron Hunter' as it journeyed from Algeciras to Cotonou. The vessel was approximately 61.2 kilometers southeast of Fuerteventura and 159.3 kilometers from the airport on Gran Canaria when the captain made a distress call to the Canary Islands Coast Guard. A 30-year-old crew member required immediate medical attention, prompting the rapid deployment of a helicopter for a medevac procedure. The Coast Guard swiftly responded, dispatching a helicopter to the distressed ship. At 02:32 a.m., the crew member was successfully hoisted aboard and transported to the heliport of Dr. Negrín Hospital in Las Palmas, where he was promptly admitted to the emergency room for urgent care.
