UK maritime safety authorities are pressing for clarity from the operators of seven maritime vessels regarding their crew's inadequate response to distress signals following a tragic collision. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has called for detailed explanations detailing how these operators plan to adhere to SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 33 moving forward. The incident at hand occurred on December 20, when the Singapore-registered bulk carrier Alam Pintar collided with the fishing vessel Etoile des Ondes near the Cherbourg peninsula, leading to the sinking of the fishing boat and the death of one of its crew members. Notably, the crew of Alam Pintar failed to provide necessary assistance after the accident. The MAIB has highlighted the crucial need for maintaining a proper lookout, especially in high-traffic waters, to prevent such incidents. Additionally, the investigation revealed that the bridge of the Alam Pintar was staffed by an inexperienced deck officer and an unqualified deck cadet, raising serious concerns about operational competency in critical situations.
