On June 24, 2017, a maritime incident occurred in the outer anchorage of Chittagong involving the bulk carrier 'Ocean Phoenix,' which was loaded with 45,000 tons of clinker. The vessel began drifting after its anchor dragged, leading to complications as the rudder and propeller became entangled in the anchor chain. In a subsequent mishap, the 'Ocean Phoenix' collided with the anchored 'Green Phoenix,' also carrying clinker cargo. The collision caused significant damage to the starboard side of the 'Ocean Phoenix,' leading to a breach in cargo hold no. 4 and resulting in water ingress. As the hold flooded, the rear of the vessel settled on the seabed. Salvage operations commenced promptly, focusing on sealing the breach to facilitate dewatering of the hold. Additionally, the 'Green Phoenix' lost one of its anchors during the event, further complicating the situation in this busy shipping area.
