Mencey Tanker Experiences Engine Failure Near Tenerife
On the morning of August 31, 2018, the tanker "Mencey" encountered an engine failure while navigating off the La Tejita coast in Granadilla, Tenerife. At the time, the vessel was en route to deliver kerosene to Tenerife South Airport. Following the breakdown, two tugboats were dispatched to tow the Mencey to the monobuoy for cargo offloading, which was executed without any spills or incidents. To ensure the operation’s safety, three vessels from Salvamento Maritimo, namely "Punta Salinas," "Guardamar Talía," and "Salvamar Alpheratz," were stationed as escorts. The Mencey had departed from Santa Cruz de Tenerife on August 29 at 4 a.m. and remained moored at coordinates 28° 4.33' N, 016° 29.27' W as of September 1.
