Ship Finance International Acquires VLCC Hunter Saga and Two Others in Strategic Deal
In a noteworthy move within the maritime industry, Ship Finance International (SFL), headed by the prominent John Fredriksen, has been officially confirmed as the purchaser of three newly constructed Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) from Hunter Group, owned by Arne Fredly. This sale and leaseback agreement, which was disclosed by Hunter Group at the end of August, encompasses the vessels Hunter Atla, Hunter Saga, and Hunter Laga, all set to be delivered from the acclaimed South Korean shipyard, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Each vessel has a net purchase price of $60 million, and the scrubber-equipped ships are set to enter into five-year bareboat charters to the Hunter Group, complete with purchase options for the owner. "The determined purchase price is significantly lower than current market broker estimates for VLCC resales, presenting SFL with an exceptionally attractive risk profile. Furthermore, this transaction is poised to enhance SFL’s fixed-rate charter backlog by over $100 million," stated SFL in their recent announcement.
