On the evening of November 15, 2014, a maritime incident unfolded off the coast of Nagagusuku Port, involving a collision between the Japanese sand dredger "Hokuhei No. 18" and the cargo ship "Yong Sheng VII". The collision occurred approximately 1.5 kilometers from the port. At around 11 p.m., the dredger capsized, leaving roughly 80% of the vessel submerged in the water. Fortunately, the Chinese crew aboard the "Yong Sheng VII", comprising 14 members, swiftly rescued all five crew members from the "Hokuhei No. 18", with no injuries reported. However, the incident led to oil leakage from the dredger, prompting the Nakagusuku Coast Guard to deploy an oil boom to contain the spill and prevent it from spreading further.
