In a remarkable development for Iraq's maritime industry, Gulftainer's Iraq Container Terminal (ICT) at Umm Qasr port has officially welcomed the country's largest-ever containership, the YM Wealth, boasting a capacity of 5,551 TEUs. Operated by Taiwan's renowned Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., the YM Wealth is part of the China Gulf Express (CGX) service, which has undergone route revisions to now incorporate a stop at Umm Qasr port, effectively linking the Far East directly to Iraq. During its inaugural visit to the ICT, the vessel successfully discharged and loaded a staggering 2,500 containers, as reported by Hellenic Shipping News. To commemorate this significant milestone, Gulftainer hosted a reception attended by notable figures such as Omran Radhi Thani, the Director General of the National Ports Authority of Iraq; Osama Ali al-Maliki, Director of the Umm Qasr Customs Authority; and Rafie Yosif Abbas, Director General of the Iraqi State Company for Maritime Transport. In his address, Gulftainer's CEO, Flemming Dalgaard, emphasized the importance of the YM Wealth's arrival, stating, 'This marks a major milestone for both Gulftainer and the Umm Qasr Port. It underscores our commitment to delivering top-notch container handling facilities to Iraq.' Dalgaard further affirmed the company's dedication to enhancing its capabilities within Iraq, aiming to attract leading global operators and accommodate larger vessels. Since expanding into Iraq in 2008, Gulftainer has been a pioneer in establishing container terminals at Umm Qasr port, where it operates ICT alongside the Iraq Project Terminal (IPT). Additionally, in 2015, it launched the Umm Qasr Logistics Centre (UQLC), a sprawling 750,000 square meter facility designed to support Iraq's burgeoning oil and gas projects.
