Cargo operations on the container ship 'YM Eternity' have officially resumed following its release from arrest in Sydney on February 10. The vessel's detention came after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) sought intervention from a federal court over its claims against the shipping line for unpaid clean-up costs. These costs stem from the incident involving the 'YM Efficiency', which saw 81 containers spill into the ocean off the Australian coast in June 2018. In response to the incident, the vessel's operator, Yang Ming, entered into a contract valued at A$15 million (approximately US$670,000) with Ardent Oceania. This contract is aimed at recovering 60 of the lost containers, while the estimated expense to locate and retrieve the final 16 containers is projected to cost an additional $5 million, placing Yang Ming’s total liability at around $20 million. However, Yang Ming has contested these claims, asserting that their response to the pollution caused by the incident was swift and substantial. They emphasized their commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of the Hunter Coast, stating that significant resources and manpower were allocated promptly to manage the situation. "Yang Ming has consistently worked alongside the New South Wales government to ensure that any debris linked to the incident is addressed promptly—even if it is not directly associated with our cargo. All of these clean-up efforts, which were made at a considerable cost, were funded by Yang Ming and our insurer," the company remarked. Furthermore, Yang Ming raised concerns regarding the environmental implications of container removal from deep waters. According to their assessments, retrieving some containers could inadvertently release plastics into the ocean, potentially causing more harm than leaving them undisturbed. Experts have suggested that the most environmentally sound course of action would be to monitor the situation before any further actions are taken regarding these submerged containers.

In a significant legal move, the 'YM Eternity', a vessel operated by Yang Ming Maritime Company, found itself under arrest at the DP World Sydney Container Terminal following its arrival on February 8, 2020. This action stems from a substantial pollution debt involving a previous incident with the company's sister ship, the 'YM Efficiency', which infamously lost 81 containers off the Hunter Coast in 2018. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) took decisive steps by petitioning the Court Admiralty to recover this multi-million dollar debt. According to AMSA estimates, the cost of cleaning up the pollution could reach as high as $20 million, an amount that the Taiwanese shipping firm has thus far declined to settle. On the morning of the arrest, the Court Admiralty Marshall acted on the court's ruling, apprehending the 'YM Eternity' at Port Botany to ensure the debt is addressed.
