On June 3, 2021, at 11:30 a.m., a serious incident occurred at the OOCL Container Terminal in Kaohsiung when the neo-panamax vessel, 'OOCL Durban' (IMO: 9731113), collided with the docked container ship 'YM Constancy' (IMO: 9733104) at berth 70. The allision resulted in the accommodation block of the 'OOCL Durban' striking a gantry crane on the quay, leading to a catastrophic collapse that also affected another nearby crane. Following the accident, one shore worker sustained injuries and was quickly transported to Ruan General Hospital for treatment due to a cut on his arm. Additionally, two crane operators became trapped in the debris but were safely rescued after an hour. Fortunately, they emerged without injuries. Preliminary investigations suggest that navigational errors contributed to the incident while the 'OOCL Durban', guided by a pilot, was en route to berth No. 66. Despite the severity of the collision, the 'YM Constancy' remained operational and departed the port the same evening, set for Hong Kong with an estimated time of arrival on June 4. The total damage caused by the fallen gantry cranes, valued at approximately $20 million USD, has resulted in suspensions of loading and unloading operations at Pier 70. The area of the collapse has been cordoned off as authorities assess the situation.
