TW Hamburg Faces 12-Month Ban from Australian Ports Amid Crew Abuse Allegations

Jul 30, 2020 13:11

In a significant enforcement action, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has imposed a 12-month ban on the bulk carrier 'TW Hamburg' from entering Australian ports. This decision was made after AMSA inspectors conducted a thorough inspection of the vessel in Gladstone on July 24, 2020. The inspection was prompted by a tip-off from crew members regarding expired employment contracts and their pending repatriation. Upon boarding, inspectors were approached by seafarers who expressed concerns over underpayment. Following an investigation, AMSA confirmed that the crew was collectively owed approximately AUD $42,000. Furthermore, it was revealed that the crew members possessed duplicate employment agreements indicating wage discrepancies of about 25%, leading to unjust underpayment. In addition to financial discrepancies, AMSA officials found that the quality and quantity of food onboard fell short of the standards mandated by the Maritime Labour Convention. The living conditions aboard the 'TW Hamburg' were alarming, with a filthy galley and inadequate hygiene practices observed throughout the ship. Fortunately, the crew has since been repatriated following these findings. The 'TW Hamburg' left Gladstone on July 25, heading to Jing Tang, and will remain banned from Australian ports until July 29, 2021.
