Renovated Japanese Ferry 'Hayabusa No. 3' Reborn as 'Callirhoe' for Saronic Gulf Services
Saronic Ferries has proudly announced the official renaming of the former Japanese ferry 'Hayabusa No. 3' to 'Callirhoe' as it prepares to join the company’s growing fleet. Acquired in early 2024 from Seikan Ferry, this addition strengthens Saronic Ferries' roster to six RoPax vessels. Initially dubbed 'Yabusa' post-acquisition, the ferry underwent a significant refurbishment at COSCO Shipyard in China, where new accommodation structures were installed. Following these enhancements, it was towed to Piraeus, arriving on March 4 for final modifications, which are now complete. The 'Callirhoe' is set to operate on routes connecting Piraeus with the scenic islands of the Saronic Gulf, enhancing the travel experience for passengers and contributing to regional tourism.
Historic Voyage: Ferry 'Yabusa' Sets Sail from Japan to Greece
On January 7, 2025, the ferry 'Yabusa' was seen refueling in the eastern anchorage of Singapore as it prepared for a monumental journey to the Greek Saronic Ferries. This marks a significant transition for the vessel, which has faithfully served in the Tsugaru Strait between Honshu and Hokkaido for the past 24 years. Amid rising concerns over Houthi terrorist attacks on shipping routes through the Red Sea, the 'Yabusa' will embark on an extended route, navigating around the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in a voyage that will take nearly two months to complete. Previously known as 'Habayusa No. 3', the ferry was operated by Seikan Ferry before it was sold to Greek investors in mid-2024. Owned by Sunquest Oceanic, a company registered in the Marshall Islands, the 'Yabusa' is currently flying the Panamanian flag as it commences this historic delivery journey. Upon arrival, the vessel is set to operate on key routes linking Piraeus with various islands in the picturesque Saronic Gulf.
