Tanker Rescued After Five Days Adrift Due to Fuel Pump Failure

The vessel 'Y L W', which was on its way from Kolkata's Haldia Dock Complex to Sharjah, faced a significant setback as it was stranded at sea for a grueling five days due to a malfunctioning fuel pump. The ship was anchored approximately 14 nautical miles offshore when the technical issues were addressed with the timely intervention of the Kerala Maritime Board at Vizhinjam on February 18, 2025. The situation arose when the Thiruvananthapuram-based shipping agency, Dowins Resources, reached out for assistance. To ensure a swift repair, a tugboat was dispatched to deliver a replacement fuel pump, which arrived at 8 p.m. on February 17. The crew skillfully transferred the new component from the tugboat to the bitumen tanker using the ship's onboard deck crane. Following these repairs, the 'Y L W' was back on its course towards Sharjah around midnight on February 18. For their pivotal role in the tanker’s rescue, the Kerala Maritime Board received a fee of ₹75,000.
