Bulk Carrier 'Xin Tian Yuan' Runs Aground in Suez Canal

Apr 03, 2026 11:07

On April 2, 2026, at 12:38 p.m. local time, the bulk carrier 'Xin Tian Yuan' encountered trouble in the Suez Canal, grounding at kilometer 87. The incident occurred when the vessel, bound for Singapore from Damietta, experienced a technical malfunction affecting its rudder while navigating a northbound convoy. In response, the Suez Canal Authority's Main Navigational Control Center swiftly dispatched five tugs to the location: 'Svitzer Suez 1', 'Mohamed Beshir', 'Nabil Al-Hilaly', 'Mosaed 2', and 'Azm 2'. Thanks to these efforts, by approximately 4:00 p.m., the 'Xin Tian Yuan' was successfully refloated and escorted to the Great Bitter Lakes, where crew members addressed the technical issue. Importantly, the grounding did not disrupt southbound traffic along the canal, and movements for the northbound convoy were expected to resume once the 'Xin Tian Yuan' passed required safety inspections at the Great Bitter Lakes. As of April 3, the vessel remained securely anchored at position 30° 20' N 032° 23' E.
