Container Gantry Cranes Collide with Queen Juliana Bridge in Curaçao

Feb 17, 2020 10:46

On February 16, 2020, the container vessel 'Wish Way' experienced a significant mishap as it arrived in Willemstad, Curaçao, from Taicang. The ship, which was carrying two container gantry cranes, collided with the iconic Queen Juliana Bridge during its passage underneath. The bridge, standing at a height of 56 meters, was thought to provide ample clearance; however, the cranes' height was two-thirds of the expected transit space needed for safe passage. Fortunately, despite the incident, bridge traffic was temporarily halted for an inspection, but reopened shortly after as the structural damage proved to be minimal. In contrast, the cranes sustained considerable damage, impacting their planned assembly in the port. Originally slated to take two to three months for setup, the timeline for construction now faces delays due to this unforeseen event.
