In a significant military maneuver, Turkey has dispatched two naval ships and a submarine to observe the activities of a drilling vessel in the eastern Mediterranean. This action, announced by the military on Thursday, is poised to exacerbate tensions with Cyprus, particularly following the recent breakdown of reunification discussions aimed at healing the division between the island’s Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. The drilling operations, a contractual agreement between Cyprus and France's Total, commenced shortly after the collapse of these critical talks last week. Turkey has expressed intentions to impose measures against Cyprus, arguing that the hydrocarbon resources in the waters surrounding the island should be shared by both parties. To ensure the safety of oil transportation, the Turkish military has deployed frigates and a submarine to the region. One of the frigates, in particular, has been tasked with closely monitoring the drilling activities off the coast of Cyprus. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu indicated that the nation's energy and foreign ministries are collaborating to formulate a response to what it considers the unilateral actions of the Greek Cypriots. This comes as the 'West Capella' drilling vessel, contracted by France's Total and Italy’s Eni, takes its position to commence gas exploration in the area.

Seadrill Partners LLC (SDLP) has successfully clinched a one-well contract with Total E&P Cyprus B.V. for its drilling unit, the WEST CAPELLA, located in Cyprus. The contract is anticipated to kick off in the latter half of 2017, contributing an estimated backlog of around $10 million over approximately 50 days of work. Notably, the WEST CAPELLA has undergone recent enhancements, including the addition of a Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) system, which is set to play a crucial role in the execution of this upcoming project.
