Working Conditions Aboard the Weser-Highway

On January 8, 2025, at approximately 11:45 a.m. local time, the vehicle carrier 'Weser Highway' encountered an allision while docking at the Rostock Seaport. The incident, which occurred as the vessel approached from Halmstad with the assistance of two port tugs, resulted in substantial damage to the port facility. Following the collision, the Rostock Water Police Inspectorate (WSPI) received a notification from the Warnemünde traffic control center around 12:00 p.m., prompting an immediate investigation. During the docking maneuver, the vessel struck the quay with its port side, damaging a staircase and a platform. Preliminary assessments revealed multiple dents above the waterline on the ship, along with visible paint abrasions. Initial investigations indicated that adverse wind conditions contributed to the mishap. The WSPI compiled an accident report but found no indications of alcohol or drug involvement among the crew. A temporary sailing ban was instituted by the Federal Association for Transport, Postal Logistics and Telecommunications, which was lifted following the completion of the investigation around 2:00 p.m. As a result, the 'Weser Highway' resumed its voyage back to Halmstad at approximately 5:00 p.m. UTC. The estimated cost to repair the damages to the port facility is around 50,000 Euros.
