Sanctioned tanker transited Strait of Hormuz

Apr 15, 2026 11:52

**Title: Sanctioned Tanker 'Rich Starry' Navigates Strait of Hormuz Amid US Blockade** On the evening of April 13, 2026, the tanker 'Rich Starry' successfully transited the strategic waters of the Strait of Hormuz, making its way towards Sohar. Notably, the vessel took a looping trajectory as it neared Iranian waters. Both the 'Rich Starry' and its owner, Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping Co Ltd., are currently listed under US sanctions, facing allegations of transporting sanctioned products from Iran and Russia. The 'Rich Starry' had previously loaded 250,000 barrels of methanol in Hamriyah, firmly positioning itself outside the jurisdiction of Iranian ports. However, on April 15, the tanker attempted to navigate back through the Strait of Hormuz but was thwarted by the ongoing US blockade. Initially known as the 'Full Star', this tanker was blacklisted by US authorities in 2023 for its role in helping Iran evade energy sanctions. This marked the second endeavor for the 'Rich Starry' to exit the region, after its first attempt coincided with the enforcement of the US blockade, effective from April 13 at 4 p.m. MEST. The tanker initially turned back, only to re-attempt its journey hours later. On April 14, it seemed to angle towards the eastern side of the Strait. While sailing under a Malawi flag, it’s worth noting that the landlocked African nation does not maintain an official registry for ocean-going vessels. The US military has stationed approximately 15 warships around the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz as part of its efforts to enforce the blockade on ships that have previously docked at Iranian ports or were en route to Iran.
