On February 18, 2020, the cargo vessel 'Magnate,' carrying 19 crew members, docked in Chennai after its journey from Shanghai with a steel shipment. Upon arrival, health officials were alerted to the presence of two crew members exhibiting flu-like symptoms, including fever. In response to these concerns, the two affected individuals were promptly isolated for testing as maritime medical staff boarded the vessel. Additionally, the remaining crew were kept isolated within the ship's superstructure to ensure safety protocols were observed. To protect public health, the ship was cordoned off, preventing any port personnel or dock workers from approaching it. As assessments were made on whether to offload the cargo or return to China, the initial test results returned negative for coronavirus. With these developments, plans are underway to likely proceed with offloading the cargo safely.
