Ferry sidelined after water jet damage
**Title: "Volcán de Tirajana" Faces Setback After Water Jet Incident** On February 27, 2027, at 8:30 PM, the catamaran ferry “Volcán de Tirajana” encountered a setback while navigating rough waters with winds reaching 40 knots. The vessel sustained damage to its waterjet fender, necessitating an overnight stay at San Sebastián de La Gomera's port. With approximately 20 passengers on board, destined for La Palma, the ferry was unable to provide alternative accommodation in the city, leaving travelers anxious about potential delays. As repairs were awaited, the passengers spent a restless night aboard, uncertain when they might continue their journey. The following day, February 28, the ferry company arranged for the “Bencomo Express,” operated by Fred Olsen, to transport stranded passengers back to Los Cristianos, Tenerife, before resuming their voyage to La Palma. The situation was further complicated by the unavailability of a replacement vessel from the Armas Trasmediterránea Group. Normally, the “Volcán de Teno” would serve the La Gomera route, but this catamaran has been out of commission since mid-December due to limited maneuverability caused by operating with only three engines. This mechanical limitation raises safety concerns for both the crew and passengers, as it can impede operational efficiency and lead to delays. Moreover, the crew faced additional challenges during the layover in La Palma, as the ongoing issues with the “Volcán de Teno” directly impacted their rest periods, leading to potential violations of labor regulations. This situation has reportedly been acknowledged by both the fleet management and executives based in Madrid, highlighting the broader operational challenges facing the ferry service.
Ferry suffered hydraulic failure
A hydraulic failure caused a sdelay of three hours in the departure of the "Volcán de Tirajana" from the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma on the morning of May 9, 2025. The vessel departed at 9:12 a.m. and arrived at the port of Los Cristianos at 12:30 p.m., although it had to wait for the departure of the "Volcán de Teno" to La Gomera. During the stopover in the port of Los Cristianos, technicians were on board to resolve the problem, after attempts to resolve it the previous night during the stopover in Santa Cruz de La Palma were unsuccessful. The domino effect led to a subsequent delay in the connection with El Hierro, on one of the busiest days at the start of the weekend. The vessel departed Los Cristianos at 1:10 p.m. and arrived in La Estaca at 4:10 p.m., meaning the trip took three hours.
