Pro-Palestine Activists Attempt to Disrupt Shipping in Melbourne

Dec 22, 2023 10:40

On December 21, 2023, a contingent of pro-Palestine activists took to the waters of Melbourne in a demonstration aimed at the container ship 'Vela' as it approached the city's port. This protest follows a trend of similar actions initiated by the group since November, which they claim is an effort to halt shipments destined for Israel. As the 'Vela' navigated the Yarra River on its way to the container terminal, a small flotilla of kayak protestors attempted to obstruct its passage. Owned by Costamare of Greece, the vessel had just arrived from Sydney, Australia. Contrary to the protestors’ assertions of the ship carrying military supplies to Israel, the 'Vela' is actually part of Zim’s Australia Express service, primarily transporting consumer goods such as white goods, textiles, and food items between Korea, China, and Australia. Although the protestors claimed to have momentarily disrupted port operations, their efforts lasted approximately an hour before the ship successfully docked and regular port activities resumed.
