Philippine Coast Guard Halts Van Knight Bulk Carrier's Departure from Zambales

Jan 17, 2023 11:36

In a significant move, the Philippine Coast Guard intervened to prevent the bulk carrier 'Van Knight' from departing Zambales for China. This action was executed following a cease and desist order concerning the vessel’s cargo of mineral ore, issued on January 16, 2023. The operation was carried out by the PCG Task Force Aduana, which enforced the order aimed at halting the shipment consigned to Yinglong Steel Corporation (YSC) in Sta. Cruz, Zambales. Concerns arose after the Bureau of Customs (BOC) discovered that the MV Van Knight was set to transport an unspecified quantity of mineral ore from the Philippines to China. Compounding the situation, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR-MGB) revealed that the export permit for YSC's mineral ore had been suspended as of January 12, 2023. This suspension stems from allegations that the company violated Presidential Decree No. 1586, which pertains to the establishment of an Environmental Impact Statement System and other related environmental management protocols.
