Working Conditions Aboard the Umut

On November 29, 2021, the cargo vessel m/v 'Ümit K.' (MMSI: 271002667) tragically sank at Kumcular Pier in Kartal, Istanbul, as a powerful southwesterly storm swept through the area. The vessel broke free from its moorings and was overwhelmed by the tumultuous waters. In an unfortunate twist of fate, another vessel named 'Umut' also lost its moorings and drifted directly onto the sinking 'Ümit K.' and two nearby jetties. Responding promptly to reports from concerned onlookers, a police team was dispatched to assess the situation. On April 19, 2021, the laid-up vessel 'Umut', which has been stationary at the Kartal repair pier since December 2019, experienced a dramatic incident as it broke its moorings. Adverse weather conditions in the region led to the ship drifting away from its designated spot, despite having only a watchman on board. Fortunately, with timely shore-based assistance, the 'Umut' was successfully re-berthed in the early hours of April 20, preventing possible further complications.
