In a significant legal case, the Fair Work Ombudsman has launched proceedings against Transpetrol TM AS, a Norwegian shipping firm, for alleged underpayment exceeding $255,000 to many foreign seafarers while they operated in Australian waters. The proceedings are being held at the Federal Court in Sydney, targeting the company that is part of a broader network of European entities responsible for transporting oil and petroleum products. According to the Ombudsman, Transpetrol undercompensated 61 crew members by a total of $255,042 during their employment on the oil tanker MT Turmoil, which took place between 2013 and 2015. The affected crew primarily comprised Indian and Filipino nationals, with several young individuals as young as 21 years old. The MT Turmoil was utilized for various coastal trading voyages across Australian territorial waters, connecting major ports such as Perth, Adelaide, Burnie, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Darwin, as well as Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria, under the charter of two Australian firms, BP Australia and Caltex. Importantly, no allegations have been made against the chartering companies, BP Australia and Caltex.
