Buss Shipping, based in Hamburg, is set to enhance its environmental footprint by retrofitting two of its container feeder vessels with Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems at the start of 2016. These advanced scrubbers will significantly cut sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions and fuel consumption aboard the vessels. The hybrid PureSOx systems will be installed on Condor and Corsar, with the upgrades scheduled for January and February. Operating specifically in the emission control areas (ECAs) of the Baltic Sea and North Sea—where stringent regulations on SOx in fuel and emissions are in place—these 1,025 teu ships will benefit from the ability to use lower-cost heavy fuel oil, ultimately slashing fuel expenses. The selection of a closed-loop scrubber aligns with the low-alkalinity waters found between major ports such as Rotterdam and St. Petersburg, as well as in Hamburg, where zero-discharge mandates are enforced. According to Torben Kölln, managing director of Buss Shipping, "The hybrid PureSOx systems on the Condor and Corsar will ensure we meet emission standards while maintaining optimal flexibility and fuel efficiency. This strategic investment will bolster the competitiveness of our services to charter customers."
