Their commendable act of heroism involved rescuing a distressed seafarer from a sinking liferaft amidst treacherous weather conditions during their journey from Brazil to Singapore. In a dramatic maritime rescue, a 32-year-old French sailor, Luc Pierre Bernard, was saved by the cargo vessel True Patriot on May 24, 2016. Bernard had set sail from Rodrigues aboard his yacht on the afternoon of May 20 but ran into trouble on May 23 at 1 a.m. when he discovered his boat was taking on water. In a courageous attempt to signal for help, he deployed his lifeboat and fired a distress flare. Fortunately, the flare was spotted by the True Patriot, which was approximately three miles away. The cargo ship quickly contacted the Coast Guard, who directed True Patriot to assist the stranded sailor. Bernard was successfully rescued and brought aboard the True Patriot at around 8 a.m. the following day, showcasing the critical role of maritime vessels in ensuring safety at sea.
