Abandoned 'China Board 1' Rescued Amid Typhoon Crisis
On September 24, 2022, at 11:30 p.m. UTC, the 'China Board 1' encountered a severe engine malfunction while navigating the Gulf of Tonkin, north of Da Nang. The vessel was on its journey from Vung Tau to Macau when it became disabled and adrift. The ship's owner made attempts to arrange for a tugboat; however, these salvage efforts were impeded by the imminent threat of Typhoon Noru. As conditions worsened, the decision was made to abandon the vessel. The 14 crew members, comprising five Vietnamese and nine Chinese nationals, were successfully rescued by the Vietnamese search and rescue ship 'SAR 412' on the afternoon of September 26. They were subsequently transported to Chan May port, located north of Da Nang. On the same day, the abandoned 'China Board 1' was taken in tow by the tug 'Chan May 02' and was relocated approximately five kilometers off the coast of Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam. To ensure safety, the captain instructed the closure of all fuel tank valves prior to the towing operation. This incident highlights the risks faced by maritime vessels during severe weather conditions and the importance of timely rescue operations.
