Tragic Collision at Sea Claims Lives of Two Fishermen

Sep 23, 2024 21:02

A devastating maritime incident unfolded on September 19, 2024, at approximately 1:30 p.m. when the cargo vessel 'Transformer OL', while navigating from Chittagong to Vung Tau, collided with the fishing boat 'BV99778TS 22', about 22 nautical miles southeast of Con Dao. This unfortunate clash led to the sinking of the fishing boat, resulting in all 14 crew members plunging into the ocean. Prompt action from nearby vessels enabled the rescue of 12 fishermen who were safely brought to shore, leaving two individuals unaccounted for. In response to the emergency, the Coast Guard Region 3 Command promptly dispatched the 'Coast Guard Ship 2011' to assist in the search and rescue (SAR) operation. The vessel arrived at the incident site on September 21 at 2:00 a.m., establishing contact with 'Transformer OL' and other nearby ships to amplify the search efforts. Despite the adverse weather conditions, characterized by wave heights reaching 6-7 meters and wind gusts of 8 Beaufort, the search team located the body of one of the missing fishermen drifting at sea. This tragic discovery occurred after more than two days of relentless searching. The body was retrieved and handed over to the 'SAR Ship 413' of the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center Region III at 12:50 p.m. on the same day. Subsequently, the remains were transported to the mainland to be turned over to local authorities and family members. The 'Coast Guard Ship 2011' remained in the vicinity to collaborate with authorities and fishing vessels in continuing the search for the remaining missing fisherman, even as adverse weather hindered their efforts. The search-and-rescue operations serve as a somber reminder of the dangers faced at sea.
