Alliance Vessel Grounds Off Santo Domingo Coast
On the morning of May 17, 2019, the cargo ship 'Alliance' ran aground just 400 yards from the coast near Guibia, off the scenic George Washington Avenue in Santo Domingo. The steel-laden vessel was making its way from the port of Novorossiysk and was originally scheduled to dock in Santo Domingo on May 21 at 06:00 a.m. However, upon arriving in Dominican waters five days early, the crew opted to anchor without securing the necessary prior approval. This decision led to the ship becoming stuck on the beach in front of Guibia. In response to the situation, the captain of the 'Alliance' reached out for assistance from the Dominican Navy at 4:00 p.m. on the same day. Fortunately, efforts to refloat the vessel were successful, and it was safely moored at coordinates 18° 27.48' N 069° 52.98' W by the morning of May 18.
