On December 3, 2024, the United States took firm action by imposing sanctions on 35 entities and vessels implicated in the transportation of Iranian petroleum and its derivatives to international markets. This decisive move follows the Iranian attacks on Israel on October 1, alongside developments regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions. The primary objective of these sanctions is to disrupt Iran's nuclear program, hinder advancements in their drone and missile technology, and curtail funding for terrorist proxies through oil sales. Among the targeted assets, 18 tankers have been identified as having transported millions of barrels of oil for Iran. This latest batch of sanctions extends not only to the vessels but also to several entities responsible for managing these ships and facilitating the illicit sale of Iranian oil. Notable among the sanctioned tankers are the 'Rioo Napo' and 'Lara II,' both owned and managed by the India-based Vision Ship Management LLP, which has also been placed under sanctions. The RIO NAPO is particularly significant, having previously transported Iranian naphtha to the UAE. Additionally, the tanker 'Tonil' has come under scrutiny for allegedly evading previous sanctions while transporting substantial quantities of Iranian oil. 'Tonil' is operated by the sanctioned Ukrainian Lightship Management Ltd., while the Indian Tightship Shipping Management (OPC) Private Ltd., also sanctioned, is involved in its management. This coordinated effort seeks to undermine Iran's oil export prowess and signal a broader commitment to addressing the threats posed by its provocative actions.
