On June 7, 2017, the bulk carrier 'Tong Shun,' which had been docked at warehouse 21/22 in Santos Port since June 6, encountered a critical issue when water began to flood its ballast tanks. The vessel was preparing to load an additional 30,850 tons of soybeans, bringing its total cargo to 38,796 tons. However, the influx of water caused the 'Tong Shun' to settle on the bottom of its berth, where the depth is approximately 13.2 meters, resulting in an increased draft that made it unable to float. Preliminary investigations suggest a hull breach as the possible source of the water intrusion, although investigators have yet to precisely identify the point of failure. As a precautionary measure, technicians and divers commenced their examination of the hull and flooded tanks on June 9 to determine whether the problem originated from a hole in the hull or a malfunction in the pumping system in the cargo holds.
