On January 21, 2016, a significant maritime incident occurred when the bulk carrier 'Q Jake,' along with the container ship 'Serena P' and the vessel 'Ocean Tomo,' sustained damage after 22 barges broke free from the United Bulk Terminal. This event took place at mile marker 54 on the Mississippi River, near West Point a la Hache. The 'Q Jake' was reported to have spilled bulk soybeans into the river, although the remaining cargo was successfully secured. Fortunately, the involved vessels have since been safely anchored. The detached barges were heavily loaded with coal and petroleum coke, and all but one of the barges have been located and secured. The last barge remains near the riverbank, and the U.S. Coast Guard is currently assessing its position and condition to ascertain whether it poses any navigational hazards.
