Delayed Discharge for Sanctioned Tanker ‘Tigert 6’ Highlights Insurance Concerns in Indian Ports
The sanctioned tanker, 'Tigert 6', has encountered a setback in discharging its cargo of Russian oil at a port in eastern India, specifically due to issues surrounding the verification of its insurance, which is underwritten by a Russian insurer. This delay underscores India's recent tightening of insurance regulations affecting vessels docking at its ports. Earlier this year, India focused on old, often poorly regulated 'shadow fleet' ships commonly used for transporting Russian oil. Originally scheduled to discharge its ESPO grade cargo on November 23, 2025, the Aframax vessel remains anchored near Paradip port as of November 26. The situation indicates a possible elevation in port security protocols. Since April, India has mandated online verification of insurance for vessels backed by companies outside the International Group (IG) to mitigate the risk of accepting fraudulent documents for terminal access. Notably, many vessels within the shadow fleet rely on insurance from non-IG firms. The tanker, which operates under European Union and UK sanctions, is insured by Soglasie Insurance Co Ltd of Russia, covering oil intended for the state-owned Indian Oil Corp. This cargo has been sourced from a non-sanctioned supplier. India has approved P&I coverage from 19 non-IG insurers, including eight from Russia, facilitating its continued purchase of discounted Russian oil amidst the sanctions predicament.
Tanker Damaged in Red Sea Mine Explosion
In a significant maritime incident, the tanker 'Agraria' sustained damage from a mine explosion in the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia, near Yemen, on November 25, 2020. This latest attack is part of the ongoing conflict involving Yemen's Houthi rebels. The explosion occurred during the early morning hours, breaching the vessel's hull approximately one meter above the waterline. Fortunately, all crew members aboard the 'Agraria' were unharmed, with no reported injuries from the blast. Following the incident, Saudi officials promptly boarded the tanker to assess the situation. The 'Agraria' had previously loaded oil in Rotterdam, later discharging its cargo at the Shuqaiq Steam Power Plant. The U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which oversees the security of maritime routes in the region, has been informed about the occurrence. Additionally, the Saudi-led coalition reported on November 24 that they successfully identified and neutralized five Iranian-manufactured naval mines that were planted by the Houthis in the southern Red Sea, highlighting ongoing maritime security challenges in the area.
Search Underway After Crew Member Goes Overboard from Agrari
On November 25, 2015, the merchant vessel 'Agrari,' while navigating from Le Havre to Primorsk, reported a grave situation as a crew member was unaccounted for. The last sighting of the individual was at 06:30 AM, around 15 nautical miles northeast of Bornholm. The crew member had been performing tasks on the deck earlier that morning, but tragically, he was not wearing a life jacket or flotation suit at the time of his disappearance. Conditions in the area posed additional challenges, with winds reaching speeds of around 10 m/s, wave heights measuring 2-3 meters, and water temperatures lingering around 9 degrees Celsius. Following the alarming incident, the 'Agrari' swiftly altered its course to assist in the search efforts. The Swedish Maritime Administration took charge of the search and rescue (SAR) operation after being alerted, sending out the helicopter 'Lifeguard 006' from Ronneby, along with the patrol boat 'Amfitrite - KBV 003' from Hanöbukten and the lifeboat 'Gad Rausing' from Skillinge. Additional support came from Denmark, which dispatched helicopter 'Rescue 510', lifeboats 'Leopold Rosenfeldt' and 'Jens Sörensen', and patrol boat 'Nymfen', alongside multiple merchant vessels in the vicinity. As darkness fell, the search efforts were regrettably suspended due to the reduced likelihood of locating the crew member alive. This incident highlights the importance of safety protocols on vessels, especially when working on deck in open sea conditions.
