Emergency Medial Evacuation Near Richards Bay: Indian Sailor Rescued
In a dramatic rescue operation on May 12, 2018, the NSRI Richards Bay duty crew sprang into action at 5 a.m., responding to a call from the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) regarding an urgent medical evacuation of a 27-year-old Indian sailor aboard the vessel 'Medi Hong Kong', which was en route from the United Arab Emirates. The sailor was showing symptoms of suspected Malaria, prompting swift action. The lifeboat 'Spirit of Round Table II' was deployed, along with a KwaZulu-Natal Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, to meet the ship 25 nautical miles offshore. Communication for the operation was facilitated by Telkom Maritime Radio Services. Upon reaching the 'Medi Hong Kong', the rescue paramedic boarded the vessel to assess the sailor's condition. Fortunately, the sailor was found to be stable, and he was safely transferred back to the lifeboat. He was subsequently brought to the sea rescue station, where an EMS ambulance took him to the hospital for further treatment. The rescue mission had been in planning since May 9, with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and a Government Health EMS duty doctor monitoring the sailor's health as the situation unfolded. The TNPA authorized the medevac as the vessel approached Richards Bay in the early morning, leading to this successful rescue.
