Drax Biomass Launches First Shipping Operation from Baton Rouge Port

Apr 21, 2015 09:42

On April 7, Drax Biomass marked a significant milestone as the first vessel departed from its port facilities in Baton Rouge, heading to the Port of Tyne on the East Coast of the United Kingdom. The MV TBC Princess was specifically loaded with wood pellets produced at Drax Biomass’s southern pellet mills, intended for power generation. This launch follows a substantial investment by Drax, who committed around $350 million over a period of 15 months to develop the port facilities capable of managing and shipping wood pellets from its two production plants—Amite BioEnergy in Gloster, Mississippi, and Morehouse BioEnergy in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. In addition to handling its own production, the facilities are also anticipated to accommodate pellet supplies from third-party sources. With this development, Drax Biomass projects the creation of 200 jobs by the year 2016, boosting the local economy and enhancing their operational capacity.
