Turquoise Ocean Runs Aground in Columbia River Incident
On the morning of March 27, 2015, the bulk carrier 'Turquoise Ocean' encountered a mishap while navigating the Columbia River, just off the coast of Longview. The vessel temporarily ran aground but, after a short period, managed to regain power and successfully reached its designated berth in the southwest Washington city. Fortunately, both the ship and the surrounding river showed no signs of damage, and the 21-member crew aboard remained unharmed. The incident occurred as the 'Turquoise Ocean' was proceeding downstream from the Port of Longview when it lost power. In an attempt to stabilize, the vessel initiated an anchoring maneuver but ultimately ran aground in soft sand. The ship, which was transporting potash, a key agricultural fertilizer, is scheduled for a thorough inspection of its hull by the Coast Guard before it is cleared to resume sailing. Additionally, the crew will need to demonstrate the vessel's safe operational capabilities to the authorities.
Coast Guard Performs Lifesaving Medevac Near San Juan
On April 8, 2013, swift action by the Coast Guard resulted in a critical medevac of a crew member from the bulk carrier 'Turquoise Ocean' approximately 10 nautical miles north of San Juan, Puerto Rico. At 4:20 a.m., the watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Juan received an urgent alert regarding a Filipino crewman who was displaying signs of a heart attack. In response, personnel from Coast Guard Boat Station San Juan deployed a 45-foot Response Boat Medium to meet the merchant vessel and facilitate the emergency evacuation. The crew of the 'Turquoise Ocean' worked efficiently to stabilize the ailing seaman using a litter and the vessel's crane, allowing for a safe transfer to the Coast Guard response boat. After the successful medevac, the Coast Guard crew transported the patient back to Sector San Juan, where he was promptly handed over to Emergency Medical Service teams. He was then taken to the Medical Center Hospital to receive further medical attention. This incident underscores the critical role of the Coast Guard in maritime emergency response.
