On August 31, 2017, a remarkable interception occurred in the Aegean Sea when the Greek Coastguard seized an impressive 700 kilograms of narcotics aboard a distressed yacht. This yacht, which experienced engine failure southwest of Nisyros, emitted a mayday signal that led to its discovery by the cargo vessel 'Shirvan', en route from Istanbul to Iskenderun. The 'Shirvan' promptly alerted the Greek authorities, enabling the patrol boat 'El Akt' to approach the distressed vessel. Onboard the yacht were three crew members, all of Turkish nationality. Upon inspection, the Coastguard discovered the illicit drugs concealed in plastic bags. The seized yacht was subsequently towed by the 'Dimosthenis Gianisis' to the port of Mandraki Nisyros, where it arrived in the early morning of September 1 for further investigation.
