On April 15, 2025, the vessel 'Taganrogskiy Zaliv' faced detention in Dalian due to significant compliance failures, registering a total of 13 deficiencies. This environmental incident led to the release of oil over an area of approximately 1,000 square meters, which swiftly drifted into the open sea. The 'Southern Bay', which regularly visits Aruba every five weeks to deliver various products including cheese and milk from the Netherlands, faced immediate repercussions following this incident. The authorities detained the ship until the owners paid a fine of $30,000 and covered the costs associated with the cleanup efforts. The spill affected not only the 'Southern Bay' but also contaminated two cruise ships and several smaller vessels in the vicinity. Investigations revealed that the leak was potentially caused by a crack in a fuel tank, which may have resulted from recent welding work. Notably, this tank had undergone maintenance just the previous month in November. The unfortunate sequence of events involved the oil leaking into a tank containing ballast water, facilitating its entry into the port waters.
