A Pakistani oil tanker, the MT Lahore, has been detained at a seaport in Dubai as of Saturday, following an order issued by a UAE court. The arrest comes after a complaint was filed by the Ukrainian shipping firm M/s Vista Shipping, which is demanding compensation of $204,000 in ship demurrages from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). The vessel was taken into custody at Fujairah Port on Friday after the court ruled in favor of the Ukrainian company. Chairman of PNSC, Arif Elahi, confirmed the vessel's detention, describing the situation as a common occurrence within the shipping industry and expressing confidence that it would be resolved promptly. "The vessel is expected to be released by tomorrow (Sunday)," Elahi stated while speaking to Business Recorder. He further noted that Vista Shipping is employing what he termed "pressure tactics" to pursue their demurrage claims, although he indicated that the specific amount demanded is currently unclear to him. According to another official at PNSC, Vista Shipping has been seeking $204,000 from the corporation. The MT Lahore had been chartered by PNSC in June of last year to facilitate the import of furnace oil to Pakistan. The official estimates the actual demurrage claims at about $186,000. To tackle the ongoing dispute, PNSC has engaged the assistance of the P&I Club, a global marine insurance entity, which may potentially require the corporation to settle the claim for approximately $210,000—an amount that PNSC is presently hesitant to pay.
