Cape Town Ports Take Precautions After COVID-19 Symptoms Emerge on M/V Corona

Mar 18, 2020 10:23

In a proactive move to safeguard public health, two vessels were temporarily held at the port limits of Cape Town following COVID-19 symptoms reported by a crew member aboard the m/v Corona. This incident began when a crew member who had traveled from Istanbul on March 9 exhibited signs of illness after sharing a flight with another crew member and six passengers who later boarded the cruise ship AIDAmira. Although only one crew member displayed symptoms, both individuals were promptly isolated on the Corona, which had departed Cape Town on March 11, 2020. On March 13, the master of the Corona reached out to the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) and the Port Health unit of the National Department of Health, confirming the situation and requesting to return to Cape Town for evacuation procedures. Approval from both authorities enabled the vessel to return, arriving at port limits on March 16, where it awaited further instructions. Efforts to evacuate the symptomatic crew member involved collaboration among the MRCC, Port Health, and the Harbour Master of Cape Town, with the South African Air Force providing helicopters for hospital transport. Complicating matters, the six passengers on the AIDAmira had also been on the same flight as the affected crew members but showed no symptoms. Nevertheless, the AIDAmira's master took no chances and placed them in isolation for continuous monitoring, while the vessel operated its scheduled route between Cape Town and Walvis Bay. On March 13, AIDAmira was carrying 1,240 passengers and 486 crew members on a return trip to Cape Town when authorities flagged the potential risk based on the earlier flight connections. Upon the AIDAmira's arrival at Cape Town on March 15, the situation prompted the establishment of a Joint Operation Centre (JOC) on March 16. This included officials from TNPA, SAMSA (MRCC), Port Health, and a specialist doctor. After assessing the situation and ensuring safety protocols, the JOC granted permission for the AIDAmira to dock. The six passengers were evacuated and taken to a medical facility for testing, then shifted to a quarantined area arranged by Port Health officials. As a precautionary measure, the remaining passengers were held on board until test results from the six were received. Thanks to swift action, only one crew member showed signs of illness, and none of the AIDAmira passengers presented symptoms. By March 18, Port Health officials had cleared both vessels to resume their respective journeys. Passengers aboard the AIDAmira can expect to disembark in Cape Town before continuing to their home destinations, marking a successful navigation through a potential health crisis.
