Ship seized for smuggling cigarettes

Feb 25, 2026 13:12

**Title: Naval Command Seizes 'Sun Voyage' Amidst Major Cigarette Smuggling Operation** On February 24, 2026, the Philippine Naval Command Western Mindanao captured the 'Sun Voyage,' a vessel operated by a crew hailing from Myanmar, after it was found allegedly transporting an enormous quantity of illicit cigarettes. The maritime interception occurred off the coast of Sultan Kudarat, specifically near Kalamansig Port, where the ship had been observed drifting for a week. Initially flagged by Navy personnel under the impression that the ship was in distress, a subsequent boarding of the 'Sun Voyage' revealed an astonishing cargo of more than 3,000 master cases of contraband cigarettes. The ship’s captain was unable to provide any necessary import certificates or clearances for the shipment. Although a complete inventory of the seized cargo is still pending, preliminary estimates appraise the value of the shipment at an astonishing PHP 171 million. The 'Sun Voyage' was reportedly en route from Cambodia to Davao City when it was intercepted. The captain claimed the vessel embarked on its journey carrying as many as 7,000 master cases. During the towing process to Zamboanga City, Navy personnel noted two smaller boats attempting to approach the 'Sun Voyage,' instigating suspicions that these vessels may have been receiving offloaded contraband while in transit. Upon seeing the Navy escort, the smaller crafts fled the scene. Further investigations led Navy forces to discover a motorized banca named MB Skyblue in the waters of Sebago Island in Basilan. On inspection, this smaller vessel was found to be carrying an additional 480 master cases of smuggled cigarettes, valued at approximately PHP 26.2 million. The crew of the MB Skyblue also lacked the necessary documentation for their cargo, leading to their detainment alongside the 'Sun Voyage' crew, comprising a total of seven members. Both vessels and their crews were subsequently escorted to the WMNC headquarters in Zamboanga City for further scrutiny and processing.
