Investigation Concludes in Disappearance of Ocean Caesar Crewman
Authorities from the Sunshine Coast have ruled out any foul play in the tragic disappearance of a Korean crew member from the coal carrier 'Ocean Caesar' (IMO: 9439125). The search effort, which extended over 36 hours, came to a disappointing end when it was determined that survival was unlikely after the crewman reportedly fell overboard approximately 180 kilometers northeast of Bundaberg on April 9, 2011, around 3 p.m. The Water Police and detectives from the Sunshine Coast property squad boarded the Ocean Caesar at 7:30 a.m. on April 11, after the vessel was ordered to berth at the pilot boarding ground, located eight kilometers off Kawana Coast. The ship had previously sailed from Hay Point on March 13, carrying a cargo of coal destined for South Africa. In the wake of the incident, law enforcement conducted an extensive six-hour interview with the ship's crew of 21, using translators to facilitate communication. Following their investigation, police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the crewman's disappearance. The Ocean Caesar resumed its journey around 1:30 p.m. on April 11 after completing the required boarding procedures.
